Showa Sonei

Showa Village, Fukushima Prefecture

昭和村営スキー場 福島県昭和村

Showa Sonei was a small local ski area named for its location, Showa Village, in the western region of Fukushima Prefecture. Sonei basically means 'managed by the village'. Showa Sonei had just one single lift and another simple lift, both around 300m in length. It was on the northern face of Gongenyama, also the original name of this ski area.

Further Information

  • Showa Sonei was initially known as Gongenyama Ski Area  権現山スキー場

  • In a guidebook from 1993, it was listed as Showa Sonei Gogenyama Ski Area  昭和村営権現山スキー場

  • Gongenyama is the name of the nearby mountain

  • The ski area was operated by the village

  • Showa Sonei opened in 1981 and closed in 2003

  • It had one single lift and one ポーラスター (polar star) simple lift

  • The main base building and single lift have been removed

  • The concrete base of the single lift very likely remains, but on a visit in late July 2022, it was completely covered in bushes and undergrowth and so was not visible

  • It can just about be seen on one of the above photos (....maybe!)

  • The slope on the right side was completely inaccessible for the same reason

  • It appears that some trees have been planted on the old main slope
