Mikawa

美川スキー場 愛媛県久万高原町

Mikawa was a ski area located in Kumakogen Town in Ehime Prefecture. Mikawa opened in 1960 and it was one of the larger ski areas on the island of Shikoku in western Japan. It was a 90 minute drive from Matsuyama City and also accessible from the south and Kochi Prefecture. Mikawa often struggled with low snowfall and eventually closed in 2010.

Further Information

  • Mikawa was one of the larger ski areas on the island of Shikoku in western Japan
     
  • The 127m pair lift went from the base car parks to the bottom of the ski area courses
     
  • It was effectively a connecting lift and was called Number 5 lift
     
  • No record can be found of there ever being a Number 4 lift at Mikawa
     
  • The Number 2 lift was added in 1980
     
  • The Number 3 lift was added in 1982
     
  • Snowmaking machines and night time floodlights were installed in 1988
     
  • Mikawa closed for the 2009-2010 season on 21st February 2010
     
  • That date became the last day of operation
     
  • The peak year for Mikawa was 1983 when about 60,000 people visited the ski area
     
  • Mikawa often struggled with low snowfall
     
  • It was permanently closed (officially abolished) in 2014
     
  • An old car park has recently been used as a car racing track called Highland Park Mikawa ハイランドパーク みかわ
     
  • Mikawa should not be confused with Mikawa Onsen  三川温泉スキー場  in Niigata Prefecture
