Further Information

  • This ski area was mostly known as Rosse Sportsland  ロッセスポーツランド

  • It was also known as Oku Hida Rosse Kogen Ski Area  奥飛騨ロッセ高原スキー場

  • And Rosse Kogen Ski Area  ロッセ高原スキー場

  • ...and just Rosse Ski Area  ロッセスキー場

  • When the ski area was operating. the location was known as Nyukawa Village 丹生川村

  • Rosse  呂瀬  was the name of a neighbourhood of Nyukawa Village

  • Nyukawa Village became part of Takayama City in February 2005

  • Rosse Sportsland featured western-facing slopes with three single lifts

  • This ski area had a fan base, mainly due to the steep and varied terrain in the upper area

  • During peak times in the 1980s, it attracted between 20,000-30,000 visitors per season

  • That number was down to around 10,000 in later years of operation

  • Apparently, you could ride the longest central lift without skis or snowboard to enjoy the views from the top

  • It looks like there was also a mid-point for the central lift

  • The Rosse Sanso lodge  ロッセ山荘  (accommodating over 400 people) was located by the base of the ski area

  • That building has now been removed, as have the ski lifts

  • However, the concrete foundations of all three lifts remain, and they are all about 30-40m from the road

  • The location was visited on a beautiful day in October 2022

  • The lower slopes were covered with 2-3m tall and thick すすき (susuki) pampas grass, making it impossible to enter

  • You can just about make out one of the concrete foundations of the central ski lift in the last two photos (above)

  • (The best time to visit to see the foundations is probably early spring)

  • The old car park space is still there, and there was a small sign on one of the electricity poles that said スキー場 (ski area)
