Kita Taisetsu

北大雪スキー場　北海道遠軽町

Kita Taisetsu was a ski area located on the northern slopes of Mt Tengu in what used to be Shirataki Village, now Engaru Town, in Hokkaido. The three kanji that make up the name of the ski area mean ‘north’ and ‘heavy snow’. Kita Taisetsu usually enjoyed a long season from November until May and it was a venue for various national ski events. In recent years snowcat ski tours have been held on the mountain during the winter months.

Further Information

  • Kita Taisetsu often enjoyed a long season from November until May
    　
  • This ski area was the venue for the All-Japan Alpine Ski Championship event in 1992 and 1994
    　
  • Unfortunately the 1994 event was cancelled due to strong winds
    　
  • Kita Taisetsu closed for the 1999-2000 season
    　
  • But re-opened in 2007 for the spring season (March-May)
    　
  • During that period two of the lifts were operating and four courses were available
    　
  • For the 2008-2009 season three lifts were operating
    　
  • The lower Number 4 lift was rested
    　
  • There were periods when some courses were only open on weekends and holidays
    　
  • It closed once again from the 2009-2010 season due to the 'severe economic environment'
    　
  • There are three cross-country courses by the base area (5km, 10km and 15km)
    　
  • From 2010 private snow cat tours have been held at this location
    　
  • Shirataki Village  白滝村  became part of Engaru Town  遠軽町  in October 2005
    　
  • Kita Taisetsu is about 50km from the central area of Engaru Town
