Kokusetsu Nissho

Shimizu Town, Hokkaido

国設日勝スキー場 北海道清水町

Kokusetsu Nissho was a ski area located in Shimizu Town in the Tokachi region of Hokkaido. It was often just known as Nissho. The eastern facing slopes of Nissho offered views over the Tokachi plain. This ski area had four ski lifts but in later years operations were cut back - initially to two lifts and then to only the one base lift operating before closing. Nissho closed in the mid 2000s.

Further Information

  • The full name of this ski area was Kokusetsu Nissho  国設日勝スキー場

  • It was often known as just Nissho

  • ...and spelt in English as Nisshyo in some Japanese guidebooks

  • The ski area was located just off the Nissho Pass  日勝峠road (Route 274) in Shimizu Town

  • The location is close to the border with Hidaka Town and the Hidaka mountain range

  • The name Nissho  日勝  comes from a combination of the kanji characters for Hidaka  日高  and Tokachi  十勝  (the name of the region)

  • It is unclear exactly when the ski area opened, but two ski lifts appear to have been under construction in aerial images from 1977

  • The ski area pamphlet proclaimed that Nissho 'had two faces' - daytime and night time  「ゲレンデに2つの顔がある」

  • Night time lighting in the lower areas featured 'colour shadow'  カラーシャドウ

  • Kokusetsu Nissho was closed every Monday

  • At one time there were four operating ski lifts on the mountain - one pair and three single lifts

  • Lift operations were cut back in later years, presumably to reduce costs

  • A 1986 guide book shows all lifts operating at that time, but by the early 2000s the upper Number 2 and 3 single lifts were not operating

  • In the 2003 season due to lift operations being cut the number of visitors dropped by about 50%

  • Later the Number 4 lift was also rested, leaving only the pair lift and lower half of the mountain open

  • Apparently there was a large model/statue of a dinosaur in front of the base rest area - not sure why!

  • Unfortunately, by the mid 2000s this ski area had come to a close

  • In recent years the bridge crossing the Pekerebetsu River to get to the ski area has been damaged and is not passable by car
