Arashiyama Shimin

Takasu Town, Hokkaido

嵐山市民スキー場 北海道鷹栖町

Arashiyama Shimin was a ski area in Takasu Town, close to Asahikawa City in Hokkaido. This ski area and the accompanying ski jump initially opened in 1966, with a ski lift installed in 1968. In 1984, the ski lift had to be moved due to expansion work on the ski jump. That resulted in a very rare ski lift that changed direction mid-point. The ski area closed in 2006.

Further Information

  • Arashiyama Ski Area opened together with Arashiyama Shanze (Ski Jump) 嵐山シャンツェ in 1966

  • While it was close to the centre of Asahikawa City 旭川市, it was actually located within the boundaries of Takasu Town 鷹栖町

  • Asahikawa City was, however, in charge of the operation and management of both the ski jump and ski area

  • At first, there was a 60m ski jump but no ski lift

  • A single lift (shown in the above aerial image) was added in 1968

  • In 1984 due to expansion work on the ski jump, the ski lift had to be moved

  • This resulted in a very rare ski lift that 'changed direction' at a midpoint

  • The exact position of the lift cannot be confirmed, but it started heading up towards the right and after changing direction heading back above the ski jumps

  • (The black lines shown on the aerial image is a best guess!)

  • This was also probably the time when the second 40m ski jump was added, and the 60m ski jump became a 70m ski jump

  • Various ski jump events were held at this location, with the last one being in 2004

  • The ski area closed in February 2006 due to financial difficulties

  • The ski jump remained open for practice until 2010

  • Due to ageing, it was deemed that the facility needed refurbishment if it were to continue

  • At the same time, there were calls for the facility to be removed and for the slopes to be returned to a natural state

  • Both options required large amounts of money, and no consensus has ever been found

  • The ski jumps still remain
