Oeyama

Miyazu City, Kyoto

大江山スキー場 京都府宮津市

Oeyama - sometimes written as Oueyama - was a ski area located south of the central area of Miyazu City in the northern region of Kyoto Prefecture or Kyoto-fu. This location is actually close to the Sea of Japan and over 100km from Kyoto City. This area increasingly struggled with snowfall in recent years and seasons were getting much shorter and less reliable. Ageing lift facilities needing maintenance also helped with the decision to close Oeyama in 2016. The area now features solar panels.

Further Information

  • Oeyama had two areas, on either side of the Prefecture Road 9, the Ayabe Oe Miyazu Line  綾部大江宮津線

  • A walk across the road was required to get from one area to the other

  • The Ohira Gelande  大平ゲレンデ  was on the east side of the road and was the first area to be developed

  • It had one 400m single lift, was suitable for beginners and open for floodlit night skiing

  • The Ogasa Gelande  大笠ゲレンデ  was on the west side of the road and was fully opened sometime around the late 1980s

  • It featured one single lift and about 800m of slope

  • The Ogasa Gelande offered more of a challenge and featured a 35 degrees slope

  • Before closing, the Ogasa Gelande area was only open on weekends and holidays

  • In earlier times the season started in December and went through until February, but in recent years the seasons were getting much shorter due to less snowfall

  • In the last season of operation it was only able to open on 23rd January

  • ...and less than 2,000 people used the ski area

  • On a clear day, fine views over to the Sea of Japan could be enjoyed

  • An increasing amount of solar panels can now be found in this location
