Naruko was a ski area located in the Naruko Onsen region of Osaki city in Miyagi Prefecture. This ski area opened in 1962 as Hanabuchiyama and over the years had a number of name changes before settling on Naruko. The 6 person gondola used to operate during the summer season for sightseeing. Naruko last opened in 2002 but the facilities still largely remain in place.

Further Information

  • Naruko is on the southern slopes of Hanabuchiyama  花渕山  and close to the popular Naruko Onsen  鳴子温泉  hot spring town area
     
  • It opened as Hanabuchiyama  花渕山スキー場  in 1962
     
  • The name was changed to Kokusetsu Kanabuchiyama  国設花渕山スキー場  in 1964
     
  • The lower single lift had a mid-point where skiers could alight
     
  • The top Number 3 pair lift (1,105m) opened in 1970
     
  • Various national events were held at the ski area that year
     
  • The name was changed to Naruko Sky Valley  鳴子スカイバレー  in 1993
     
  • A 6 person gondola called Naruko Skyporter  鳴子スカイポーター  opened in that year
     
  • The name of the ski area changed once again to just Naruko and the gondola was renamed Sky Valley
     
  • Snow making machines were installed for the 1995-1996 season
     
  • Naruko was last open for the 2001-2002 winter season
     
  • Facilities largely remain in place
     
  • The gondola used to operate during the green season for sightseeing
     
  • Naruko Onsen is famous for its wooden kokeshi dolls
     
  • The Japan Kokeshi Museum  日本こけし館  is located just over 1km from the base of the ski area
     
  • Before this ski area opened, another ski area in Miyagi Prefecture was previously known as Naruko Ski Area
     
  • That ski area is currently known as Uenono  上野々スキー場
