Asama Onsen

Matsumoto City, Nagano Prefecture

浅間温泉スキー場 長野県松本市

Asama Onsen was a ski area located on the northern slopes of Hakamagoshiyama, to the east of central Matsumoto City in Nagano Prefecture. It was also known as Hakamagoshiya Ski Area. This ski area opened in the 1950s and closed in the early 1970s. The single lift remains in place with all the chairs left hanging from the cables. Nature has taken over, making for some surreal images.

Further Information

  • Asama Onsen is an onsen hot spring town area to the east of central Matsumoto City

  • Asama Onsen Ski Area was located about 13km further to the east, on the northern slopes of Hakamagoshiyama  袴越山

  • It was also known as Hakamagoshi Ski Area  袴越スキー場

  • There was one 450m single lift at Asama Onsen Ski Area

  • The ski area closed way back in 1972, but the ski lift remains in place, complete with all the chairs

  • It is almost as if the ski area closed one day and just abandoned at short notice

  • The top of the lift can be seen by the side of the road

  • The ski runs went down on either side from that point

  • There was also a rope tow lift

  • What looks like the remains of the rope tow engine remains in the central area of the mountain

  • However, the exact positioning of the rope tow lift cannot be confirmed

  • The aerial photograph from 1975 (above) shows three buildings across the road from the top of the lift

  • That space is elevated from the road, but is now just flat - there are no remains of any buildings

  • A 1973 ski guide book states that the single lift cost 50 yen for one ride and 500 yen for 11 rides

  • The 70m rope tow cost 20 yen

  • It is hard to imagine but apparently there was night skiing at this ski area (!)

  • While other facilities remain in place, there is no evidence of floodlights

  • A bus from Matsumoto to the ski area took about 1 hour 20 minutes along a winding road

  • The Hakamagoshi bus stop was close to the top of the ski lift

  • The Hakamagoshi Azalea Park  袴越レンゲツツジ群生地  can now be found in that top area by the road

  • The Japanese Azalea  レンゲツツジ  is the official City Flower of Matsumoto City
