Suidosan

Mitsuke City, Niigata Prefecture

水道山スキー場 新潟県見附市

Suidosan was a ski area located on the eastern side of the small mountain of the same name in Mitsuke City, Niigata Prefecture. Unfortunately, it is one of those ski areas for which very little information is available - even locals in the fields at the base were not aware that there used to be a ski area in their neighbourhood! It appears that Suidosan was open in the 1970s, and while there were some floodlights for night skiing, there were no ski lifts.

Further Information

  • It is thought that Suidosan Ski Area was open around the 1970s

  • No record can be found of there ever being any ski lift in this location

  • A small path connects the eastern side of the hill with the top ridge area

  • A few poles remain by that path going up the hill

  • Apparently, those poles were for the night skiing floodlights

  • When asked, some locals in their 30s did not know there used to be a ski area in their neighbourhood...

  • ...their grandmother did, though!

  • Mitsuke City describes Suidosan as a small mountain about 60m above sea level  海抜60メートル程の小高い山

  • There are two parks on the top ridge called Suidosan Koen  水道山公園  and Kannonyama Koen  観音山公園

  • That top area is famous for beautiful yoshino cherry trees in spring and over 4,000 hydrangea in the rainy season

  • The photographs above were taken in mid-June 2020 when the hydrangea were in full bloom
