Asahi Tenguston

Snow Park

Hamada City, Shimane Prefecture

アサヒテングストンスノーパーク 島根県浜田市

Asahi Tenguston Snow Park was a ski area located in what used to be the area known as Asahi Town - now part of Hamada City - in Shimane Prefecture. This ski area was able to open for just 25 days in the 2018-2019 season. It intended to be operating during the 2019-2020 winter season but a severe lack of snowfall in the region prevented it from opening… even for one day. It since announced that it would be closing for good.

Further Information

  • When Asahi Tenguston first opened, it was located in what used to be Asahi Town  旭町

  • On 1st October 2005, Asahi Town became part of Hamada City  浜田市

  • The name of the ski area seems to have come from the name of the town and the nearby mountain Mt Tenguishi  天狗石山

  • 'Ishi' means stone in English and the word 'good' is sometimes pronounced as 'gu' in Japanese....

  • So 'Ten-gu-ishi' somehow became Ten Good Stones

  • The name Asahi Ten Good Stones was written on the side of the gondola station and gondola cabin

  • However, the name of the ski area was most often written in English characters as Asahi Tenguston (or Asahi Tengston)

  • At one time the name in Japanese seems to have used the kanji for the town, Asahi Tenguston  旭テングストンスキー場

  • The lower single lift was not operating in later years (and it appears to have been removed)

  • At one time around 100,000 people a season visited this ski area

  • Due to low snowfall Asahi Tengston could only open for 25 days during the 2018-2019 winter season

  • In that season only 6,800 people visited during those 25 days

  • Unfortunately, it was not able to open even one day during the 2019-2020 season due to even less snowfall

  • Ownership of the ski area changed hands a number of times

  • In spring 2020 it was announced that it would be closing
