Further Information

  • Mogamigawa Ski Area was also known as Kokusetsu Mogamigawa Ski Area 国設最上川スキー場

  • It was established in 1980 with a capital of 70 million yen

  • The ski area was accessed from Takaya Station 高屋駅 on the local Rikuu Saisen Line 陸羽西線 that connects Shijo City with Sakata City

  • There were three lifts, with the bottom two running in parallel

  • At one time, sales exceeded 100 million yen

  • In the later years of operation, skiing had become less popular, and the ski area was sometimes struggling with snowfall

  • It went bankrupt and closed in 2000

  • The licence to use the national forest was revoked, and an order was issued to restore it to its original state

  • However, that was not implemented due to a lack of assets

  • In an interview in June 2016, the mayor of Togari Village said that in 2006 an agreement was signed to restore the site

  • He also said that a committee was established to work on nature restoration

  • It was noted that the abandoned buildings and remaining ski lifts presented dangers and the possibility of accidents and hoped that something could be done to remove them

  • However, they still remain in place in 2022

  • Nature restoration activities at the location continue
