Rokuroshi Kogen

Ono City, Fukui Prefecture

六呂師高原スキー場 福井県大野市

Rokuroshi Kogen was a ski area east of central Ono City in Fukui Prefecture. The ski area has a long history with numerous changes along the way, including a closed period between 2012 and 2016. It re-opened as a downscaled Rokuroshi Kogen Ski Park, complete with a summer ski slope, in 2017. However, that project did not last long and closed in 2021. The ski facilities were removed in spring 2023 to make way for a future planned auto-camping facility.

Further Information

  • Rokuroshi Kogen Ski Area has a long history dating back to around 1924, when it was first developed by a local youth association

  • A company was in charge of the ski area by 1972, establishing it as a popular family slope

  • In 1983 a 106-person capacity hotel opened in the base area, and the ski area was 'relaunched' as a cooperative association

  • In 1998 the nearby Urarakan hot spring facility opened

  • At one time, four ski lifts were operating - one pair lift and three single lifts

  • One old newspaper article actually mentions a possible fifth lift, but that cannot be confirmed

  • The exact positioning of the lower three lifts is unclear (due to conflicting information in different guidebooks), so they may be slightly inaccurate in the above image

  • As snowboarding became popular, Rokuroshi Kogen featured a snowboard park with a half pipe

  • At its peak in popularity, the ski area had 130,000 visitors in 1996

  • That number fell below 20,000 visitors in the 2000s

  • In later years of operation during that period, only the pair lift was used

  • The ski area closed suddenly just before the ski season in December 2012 due to the bankruptcy of the operating organisation

  • In 2016 two simple surface lifts (200m and 100m) were installed

  • The ski area reopened as Rokuroshi Kogen Ski Park on 21st January 2017 with one 300m run and an average slope gradient of 7 degrees

  • A summer slope, the first in the Hokuriku region, was also created

  • The green plastic mat-covered slope was 25m wide with scattered sprinklers sprinkling water in the form of mist every few minutes to improve sliding and cool the mats

  • Apparently, 260 million yen was spent by the prefectural government on the reopening, but not enough people used it, and the ski area closed again in 2021

  • A budget of 75 million yen was assigned to dismantle the facilities, which took place in the spring of 2023

  • Apart from the main base building, little evidence of the old ski area now remains

  • There are plans to develop an auto-camping site and other facilities at the location in association with Montbell, the major outdoor equipment manufacturer
