Asahiyama

(Manza Onsen)

Tsumagoi Village, Gunma Prefecture

朝日山ゲレンデ(万座温泉スキー場) 群馬県嬬恋村

Manza Onsen is a ski area in Tsumagoi Village in the western region of Gunma Prefecture. The ski area remains open in 2024, but until 2011, there was a section of the ski area called Asahiyama. Asahiyama was east of the main ski area, and the westerly-facing slopes were serviced by two ski lifts. They were last open in 2011 and have now both been removed.

Further Information

  • Manza Onsen is the highest onsen hot spring in Japan that can be reached by car throughout the year

  • Manza Onsen is also the name of the ski area that opened in 1956

  • The Asahiyama ski lifts and courses of Manza Onsen were to the east of the main ski area

  • There was a connecting ski course, but it was not suitable for beginners, who generally took a bus to Asahiyama

  • Asahiyama had two ski pair lifts (759m and 445m)

  • Some old guidebooks appear to indicate that one or both may have been initially single (one person) lifts

  • The top end point of the Asahiyama Number 1 朝日山第1 lift was by the side of Route 292 (though this section of the road was closed in winter)

  • Manza Ropeway 万座ロープウェイ opened in December 1961

  • The Manza Eki 万座駅 station of the Ropeway was about a 200m walk from the top of the Asahiyama Number 1 lift

  • The Ropeway closed in 1971 and has long since been removed.... information about Manza Ropeway will be added in the next update

  • The two Asahiyama lifts were last open in 2011

  • Both of the ski lifts have now been removed

  • While the Asahiyama area and Manza Ropeway are both long gone, Manza Onsen ski area remains open in 2024
