熊池ゲレンデ(万座温泉スキー場) 群馬県嬬恋村

Manza Onsen Ski Area is a ski area in Tsumagoi Village in the western region of Gunma Prefecture. It remains open, but at one time, there was a section of the ski area called Kumaike Gelande. Kumaike was to the south of the main ski area, and had one 560m ski lift which was last open in the mid-1980s.

Information

  • Manza Onsen is the highest onsen hot spring in Japan that can be reached by car throughout the year

  • Manza Onsen is also the name of the ski area that opened in 1956

  • The Kumaike ski lift and run were south of (and separated from) the main ski area

  • One old guidebook says that the lift opened in 1964

  • Some old guidebooks describe Kumauke as a 'private' and quiet area

  • Guidebooks from 1973 and 1976 called it Manza Kumaike Ski Area 万座熊池スキー場 and Kumaike Ski Area 熊池スキー場, as well as Kumaike Gelande 熊池ゲレンデ

  • However, it seems to have primarily been known as just being part of Manza Onsen Ski Area

  • There was one 530m ski lift and the Kumaike Hutte 熊池ヒュッテ mountain hut at the top

  • The lift closed in 1986 and was removed

  • Since then, there have been some landslides at the location and various ongoing construction/repair work in the area

  • Unfortunately, it is no longer possible to approach the location

  • The approach road is blocked off with a strict no-entry sign, and nothing can be seen from the road

  • More information on the current Manza Onsen can be found on SnowJapan here
