Iiyama

Iiyama City, Nagano Prefecture

飯山スキー場 長野県飯山市

Iiyama was a ski area close to the centre of Iiyama City in the northern region of Nagano Prefecture. There has been a ski jump at this location for a long time. The one ski lift at Iiyama Ski Area closed in 1969. The ski lift has subsequently been removed, but Iiyama Ski Jump is still operating. Many years ago, there were quite a few small ski areas on the hills around central Iiyama, including one at the nearby Iiyama Castle Ruins. More information below.

Further Information

  • Iiyama Ski Jump  飯山シャンツェ  is about 1km to the north of Iiyama Station in central Iiyama City

  • In 1925 a simple ski area called Shinmeigaoka Ski Area  神明ヶ丘スキー場  opened in this general location

  • A ski jump was built at the location (thought it is unclear when it opened)

  • At some point, the area became known as Iiyama Ski Area

  • A town-operated ski lift was built in 1955

  • That was the first ski lift to open in Iiyama City

  • The ski lift is thought to have been on the right-hand side of the hill and to have extended into what is now a residential area on the other side of the main road

  • Various ski events were held at the ski area, but it often suffered from unreliable snowfall

  • In 1969 the ski lift was closed and subsequently removed

  • When skiing was first introduced to Japan in the early 1910s, there were other ski areas in the hills around central Iiyama

  • One was located at the Iiyama Castle Ruins  飯山城跡  less than 1km from the ski jump

  • That ski area was called Shiroyama Ski Area 城山スキー場

  • There is a sign by the side of the road at the castle ruins park that says it is 'the birthplace of skiing in Nagano Prefecture'  長野県スキー発祥の地

  • Other ski areas in the central Iiyama city area included:

  • Bouzuyama Ski Area  坊主山スキー場

  • Katayama Ski Area  片山スキー場

  • Eiganjiyama Ski Area  英岩寺山スキー場

  • Tounohara Ski Area  塔ノ原スキー場

  • Daishouji Ski Area  大聖寺山スキー場

  • Shinomiya Ski Area  四宮スキー場

  • They were all very small with gentle slopes and no ski lifts

  • Unfortunately, almost no detailed information about them can be found
