Nasu Onsen Family

Nasu Town, Tochigi Prefecture

那須温泉ファミリースキー場 栃木県那須町

Nasu Onsen Family was a ski area in the northern region of Nasu Town in Tochigi Prefecture. It opened in December 1961 as Kokusetsu Nasudake Ski Area. It remained a skiers-only area until it closed. Nasu Onsen Family had to deal with various issues in recent years, including low snowfall and lift facilities that soon required repair. In January 2022, it was announced that the 2021-2022 ski season would be its last. The ski area closed on 21st March 2022, and the town is considering options for using the facility.

Further Information

  • This ski area opened in December 1961 with one 232m single lift and was operated by the town

  • It was initially called Kokusetsu Nasudake Ski Area  国設那須岳スキー場

  • A rope tow lift was added in 1965, and then the Number 2 lift was added in 1967

  • In the 1970s and 1980s, around 50,000 skiers visited each season

  • The busiest year was 1976 when about 70,000 people visited the ski area

  • In 1994 the nearby (and larger) Mt Jeans Ski Resort Nasu ski area opened

  • More information on Mt Jeans Ski Resort Nasu (SnowJapan.com)

  • Kokusetsu Nasudake changed its name to Nasu Onsen Family  那須温泉ファミリースキー場  in 1996

  • In 1998 the Number 1 lift was replaced by a 284m pair lift

  • In recent years Nasu Onsen Family has struggled with low snowfall

  • The ski area was only able to open for 29 days during the 2015 season

  • The number of visitors in the 2018 season was about 7,000 people

  • Due to a severe lack of snowfall, only 820 people used the sledging park そりパーク area in the 2019 season

  • That facility was only able to open for 3 days in January and 4 days in February, and the main ski area was not able to open at all

  • In 2020 the number of skiers was 8,480 people, this time due to covid

  • Nasu Town outsourced the operation of the ski area to the third sector (Nasu Mirai) in 2016

  • In the last few years it was said that the ski area had operating costs of 20-30 million yen per year

  • If the ski area were to remain open, nearly 60 million yen would be required to repair the ageing ski lifts, in addition to the operating costs

  • On 27th January 2022, it was announced that it would be closing in March 2022

  • The last day of operation was 21st March 2022

  • Apparently, the return of state-owned land requires restoration to its original state, and Nasu Town will continue to pay an annual lease of 400,000 yen

  • The town mayor said that while the ski lifts will not be used, children will be able to 'play in the snow'

  • They are also looking at ways to utilise the facilities, and for it to become a valid tourist facility that attracts guests throughout the year

  • It has already been used for paragliding in the summer months

  • As it has only just recently closed, for the time being, this ski area will also remain listed on SnowJapan.com
